iPhone 3GS Encryption Apparently Useless

July 25th, 2009 Jordan No comments

iPhone Encryption

Apple’s iPhone is the smartphone that has the consumer market more empowered than ever with convenient access to the internet. The device’s ease of use makes it one of the most attractive solutions on the market, but the iPhone still hasn’t been able to crack the business market owned mostly by RIM. Businesses continue to choose BlackBerry, and it seems it’s for good reason.

According to Jonathan Zdziarski, an iPhone developer and hacker, the iPhone 3GS, even with its touted new encryption features, is nearly useless in securing sensitive information – one of the primary concerns for businesses adopting any new communications technology. He talks about this to Wired saying,

“If they’re relying on Apple’s security , then their application is going to be terribly insecure. Apple may be technically correct that [the iPhone 3GS] has an encryption piece in it, but it’s entirely useless toward security. It is kind of like storing all your secret messages right next to the secret decoder ring,” Zdziarski added. “I don’t think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it’s hard to describe why it’s such a big threat to security.”

Apple claims that many corporations and government agencies are adopting the iPhone, which makes the weak encryption claims particularly worrisome

iPhone Dev Team Releases Ultrasn0w

June 23rd, 2009 Jordan No comments

iPhone Ultrasn0w Unlock

The iPhone hackers, known as the Dev Team, has released Ultrasn0w a few minutes ago.

Ultrasn0w is a little program installed through Cydia or Icy (via jailbroken iPhones) which will unlock the iPhone 3G for use on any GSM network. It is the successor of the previous yellowsn0w which worked on previous basebands and firmwares. For the T-Mobile users, the carrier is happily supporting the iPhone since they make up quite a large user base.

Last week, the Dev Team released the iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak called redsn0w which will  probably be incorporated into QuickPwn 3.0 to make it more user friendly along with custom boot logos. QuickPwn.com is now concentrating on releasing QuickPwn before Friday this week (hopefully earlier). However,  the Dev Team and QuickPwn.com are not affiliated with each other.

To install Ultrasn0w:

  1. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to cydia or icy
  2. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
  3. Reboot your iPhone 3G
  4. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
  5. Enjoy

As incomprehensible as it sounds, the Dev Team does not accept donations. “There is no paypal account associated to us, there is no way to donate to us, we do this as a hobby and don’t want to be paid and we fund all of this ourselves and it works out just fine.”

Remember kids, don’t upgrade to the next iPhone firmware without the OK from the Dev Team.

Apple Steve Jobs

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had a liver transplant two months ago in Tennessee.  Thankfully, he is expected to return to work by the end of June.

Jobs, who went on medical leave from Apple since January, has had medical issues relating to pancreatic cancer. The type of pancreatic cancer that Jobs has will often metastasize in other organs, particularly the liver. According to the WSJ, he will work part-time upon return to help speed up his recovery.

Apple’s iPhone 3GS on Sale Today

June 19th, 2009 Jordan 4 comments

iPhone 3G SThe iPhone 3GS is finally here which so many people have been waiting for. This will be packed with brand new hardware and features including double the storage capacity, turn by turn navigation, improved battery life, a compass, and 3MP camera with autofocus and tap to focus. Also loaded with the latest OS 3.0 for Cut Copy Paste, voice control, MMS (not yet provided from AT&T), Find my iPhone, “shake to undo” feature, parental control, autofill in safari, and loads more.

Boasting a 600 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM, it sure is a leap from the 3G. Unfortunately, all of these changes will take place under the hood leaving the exterior virtually unchanged.
However, a group that does iPod and iPhone repair has already gutted the device and took pictures of the disassembly of the 3GS.

iPhone OS 3.0 Cracked and Unlocked

June 16th, 2009 Jordan No comments

Unlocked and JailbrokenThe iPhone OS isn’t set to be released until Wednesday, but the hackers at Dev-Team apparently already found a way to carrier unlock the new firmware.

This is the same team that released the PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools. The new Pwn tools are fully compatible with iTunes 8.2, but will be released directly after the new iPhone firmware. Luckily, the jailbreak continues to work on OS 3.0 for all devices previous to it.

“On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we’ll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware. The actual link for the feed will be twittered by @MuscleNerd and also placed here when the feed starts.  The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w.  But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.”

For all of you with turbosims and unlocked phones, the best thing to do would be to wait a day or two to see that everything goes as planned for the Dev-Team, making sure there are no compatibility issues with the newer bootloaders and basebands.

*UPDATE*: MuscleNerd on the Dev Team released a video of the new iPhone 3G unlocking software ultrasn0w (previously named yellowsn0w) for OS 3.0. You can view the video below.
